Jerry was born and raised in Johnson City, Tennessee, growing up in the
Locust Street Church of Christ. After accepting Christ at the age of
sixteen, he was encouraged to be involved in the church services and
activities, including teaching, delivering a short lesson, leading singing,
serving at the Lord’s Table, praying, and anything else that needed to be
done. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Marine Hospital Corpsman in
Cuba, Camp Lejeune, a Mediterranean cruise, and Vietnam. Jerry met his
wife Martha Skeen in high school. They were married in June, 1968,
three weeks before he left for Danang, Vietnam.
Upon returning from Vietnam he began serving as
Assistant Minister in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1971 Jerry went to
Southeastern Christian College in Winchester, Kentucky for two years,
graduating with an Associate degree in Bible, then to Milligan College in
Johnson City for one year. In the summer of 1974 Jerry was ordained at
his home church, and shortly thereafter moved to Fisherville, Kentucky where
he continued his education at the College of the Scriptures, receiving a
Bachelor’s degree in Bible in 1976.
Having served churches of Christ in Florida (Jacksonville), Kentucky (Sugar
Creek and Fisherville), Indiana (Dugger, Tell City, and Linton), Tennessee
(Gallatin), Jerry retired in July, 2009, but has continued preaching and now
serves the Dugger First Christian Church.
Jerry has been involved in Woodland Bible Camp near Dugger as Director since
1978, served on the board of the camp and as the buyer for about 15 years.
He has taught at the Portland Christian School of Biblical Studies (Now
called Kentuckiana Bible College) since 1985 and has served on the Executive
Committee since about 1987.
